Using autonomous vehicles or shared cars? Results of a stated choice experiment

With the development of vehicle automation and sharing economy, a mix human-driven autonomous vehicles can be expected in next few decades, which means conventional vehicles, carsharing, (AV) shared AVs will coexist, affecting way travel. AVs, especially combined with use, may contribute to reduce or solve some present most intractable urban problems such as traffic congestion, crashes wasted use spaces. Given emerging trend new mobility options, understanding decision people owning private AV versus using joining car would have important indications for policy makers ownership general. Therefore, this paper is devoted gain insight into individuals’ propensity purchasing an (autonomous) cars. Based on data collected stated choice experiment, we estimated random parameter error component model identify possible heterogeneity between individuals preference correlations various alternatives. Results show substantial exists among their preferences. People general prefer keep current buy rather than cars, are more favorable traditional sharing. Regarding not only concerned about operational costs hourly rate, but also availability access time. Moreover, younger willing accept these options.
